The University of Georgia football club is not known for being a losing team. The past season’s losing streak caused no caoncern for their coach Ritchie. He approached the whole situation with a very laissez-faire attitude. Why should he worry? Under his tutilage the team has held a sweet winning record. Further, the new recruiting season has neeted the UGA team with many new faces that are eager to leave it all on the field.
One truly cannot spell sugar without the UGA, and the UGA team is prepared to offer all of Read the rest of this entry »

Herschel Walker is one of the greatest running backs to ever play college football. Even as a freshman at the University of Georgia, he was breaking records and showing how great he was. While only a freshman, he set the rushing record for the NCAA. He helped lead the Bulldogs to a national championship and an undefeated season. Walker also won the Heisman Trophy, an award that goes to the best player in college football that year.
The Bulldog’s offense was potent with Herschel Walker carrying the ball. Defenses really had no answer for him and his running Read the rest of this entry »

Let’s face it: for a football hungry school like the University of Georgia, a 6-7 is not going to cut it. It’s not like it was dubbed a “rebuilding” year; the team did start out at 23. The fact is, you can either look at the 2010 season as one that you want to forget, or one that you want to build on. When the Bulldogs started at 1-4 things didn’t exactly look great for the Dawgs. The good news is that Mark Richt was able to rite the ship, so to say, and finish the Read the rest of this entry »

There’s nothing quite like Athens, Georgia on a game day Saturday. Not only is the entire town decked out in their finest black and red, but there are also cars, RVs, tailgating tents, and fans having fun as far as the eye can see. Life between the hedges, as the football field at Samford Stadium is called due to the boxwoods that flank each sideline, is a fine life indeed. It is impossible to walk 100 yards on game day without hearing someone barking like a dog, or a pack of sorority girls screaming, “Go Dawgs” in that famous southern drawl at the top of their lungs. Tailgating is not limited to the cars and RVs. Every bar in the famous downtown area of Athens is packed with fans who are raring to go and ready to pull the dogs to another monumental victory over one of their SEC opponents. Boys decked out in their red pants and black polo shirts. Girls in their black and red dresses, skirts, and matching purses and accessories. If it is an early game, you may see bloody mary drinks and mimosas. If it is a night game, you’ll see lots of beer being consumed. One thing’s for sure, though, you will not have trouble finding sweet southerners who are willing to share anything they have. There’s something magical about Athens on game day.
Mark Richt has enjoyed a successful tenure as the University of Georgia head football coach. With that said, however, the once smooth ride has been more tumultuous as of late, with Richt-coached teams failing to live up to the lofty standards set in his first few years at the helm.Though never known as a strict disciplinarian, the Georgia program has been plagued with off the field issues, with even more than usual incidents over the course of the past two seasons. This can’t be entirely due to Richt’s coaching philosophy, however, as Athletic Director Damon Evans was arrested and charged with a DUI in his own right, indicated the need for a culture change on a larger scale than just the football players. What matters most to fans can be summarized in terms of wins, losses and championships. Taking over for Jim Donnan in 2001, Richt quickly took the Dawgs to the top of the Southeastern Conference, winning the title in 2002, then claiming a second set of conference hardware just three short years later in 2005. An 11 win 2007 was capped with a Sugar Bowl victory, though as an at-large BCS qualifier, not SEC king, still a successful season. Read the rest of this entry »
With both BCS and Heisman trophies already resting on the mantle, there’s no use in living in denial, the SEC is Alabama’s to lose. The road will not be easy however, as one or two hiccups could easily keep the Tide from the SEC Championship. The SEC is surprisingly unbalanced this season, with typically underachieving units in the West finally emerging as true contenders. From top to bottom, you can truly find hope and optimism everywhere (outside of Starkville that is).
- Alabama With Mr. Heisman Mark Ingram back in the fold, alongside QB Greg McElroy, the Red Elephants should have little difficulty throwing their weight around on offense again this season. Critics may be concerned the defense is only returning two starters, but with Nick Saban at the helm, you can be certain the D will be ready to play come game day. Read the rest of this entry »
